1948 Bowman Football Complete Set (108)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,963

Offered is a complete set of 108 cards from the 1948 Bowman series, the first football-card set issued by Bowman Gum, highlighted by key rookie cards of many stars and Hall of Famers, including Sammy Baugh. 70% range from Ex to Ex-Mt (with a few Nr/Mt or better), and 30% Vg to Vg-Ex (includes a couple lesser and few sheet-cut). This set has been consigned by the family of an old-time collector. We have selected eight cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Tereshinski RC (pencil on back, otherwise Ex), 3 Lujack RC (SGC Auth, sheet-cut, otherwise Ex), 7 Van Buren RC (Vg), 12 Conerly RC (SGC EX/NM 80), 17 Trippi RC (Ex), 22 Baugh RC (SGC EX 60), 26 Waterfield RC (Vg-Ex), 36 Turner RC (SGC EX 60), 61 Wojciechowicz RC (SGC EX/NM 80), 63 Pihos RC (SGC EX 60), 80 Dudley RC (Vg/Vg-Ex), 99 Gilmer RC (SGC EX 60), 107 Luckman RC (SGC NM 84), and 108 Ray RC (strip of tape along the top, otherwise Ex). The 1948 Bowman baseball set was so popular that Bowman decided to try its hand at football cards later in the year, producing this ambitious 108-card football set designed very similarly to its inaugural baseball issue. Football cards never caught on quite like the baseball cards, but Bowman's commitment to the line was unwavering. Bowman continued to issue ever more elaborately designed football sets until its doors closed in 1955. This set will always be the first, and while the 1952 Bowman Large issue has always received the most attention from collectors, many feel that the 1948 Bowman set is actually the rarer of the two. The equivalent SMR value for just seven of the SGC-graded cards (not including the one Authentic and 100 ungraded cards) is $910. Total: 108 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+.
