1929 Louisville Slugger Advertising Poster
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,304
A preview of the 1929 World Series, with a salute to the 1910 fall classic, is the theme of this extremely rare and attractive H&B advertising poster. The bold headline reads “Both the Cubs and Athletics use LOUISVILLE SLUGGER BATS. Pictured below are photos of key players from both the Cubs and A’s, each holding their respective piece of lumber. Depicted here are Rogers Hornsby, Kiki Cuyler, Hack Wilson, and Riggs Stephenson of the Cubs, and Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Eddie Collins (coach), and Jimmie Dykes of the A’s. In the center are team photos of both the 1910 A’s and Cubs. This poster, which is double sided, was issued folded and sent by mail to various retailers and customers. The reverse pictures ten additional stars, each of whom uses Louisville Slugger bats: Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Mel Ott, Travis Jackson, Chuck Klein, Jim Bottomley, Lefty O’Doul, Dale Alexander, Don Hurst, and Del Bissonette. A quarter segment of the reverse promotes the company’s new “Bone-Rubbed” finish and advises customers to look for the special “Bone-Rubbed” brand, to the right of the center brand, on all its new bats. This is one of two extraordinary H&B advertising posters consigned to this auction by an extremely advanced longtime collector; each is the first example we have ever seen. This poster was never mailed and bears no writing in the blank address panel. The poster (24 x 18 inches), printed on thin paper stock, displays machine-folds as issued, with a few small tears evident at the ends of some of the fold lines. In Excellent condition overall. This is an exceptionally rare and attractive H&B poster featuring some of the game’s top sluggers of the era. Perfect for display as intended. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,304
