1921-1931 George Sisler Pro-Model Bat (with PERFECT specs as noted by Sisler in his 1924 Hitting Book!)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,703

George Sisler H&B pro-model bat (predating model numbers) dating from the 1921-1931 manufacturing pattern. As noted in the accompanying LOA provided by Dave Bushing, Sisler's facsimile signature on the barrel represents an early style that was later changed in the mid 1920s, thereby more narrowly dating the bat to the first half of the decade. The bat displays heavy use along its entire length, including numerous cleat marks near the top of the barrel and dead wood on the reverse of the barrel. A few light, linear markings are evident on the knob. George Sisler began his career as a pitcher, but, like Ruth, his hitting talents soon outweighed his value on the mound. Sisler batted over .300 for fifteen consecutive years, from 1916 until his retirement in 1930. In 1920 he posted a League-leading average of .407 and in 1922 bested that mark by batting a career high .420 (tying him for the seventh best season average of all time). His record for hits in a season (257) stood the test of time for eighty-four years before being broken by Ichiro Suzuki in 2004. One of the greatest hitters in history, Sisler finished his career with a lifetime average of .340 (fourteenth on the all-time list). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1939. Length: 36 inches. Weight: 41 ounces. Ideally, as detailed by world-renowned bat expert Dave Bushing, Sisler actually makes note of those very specifications when discussing the length and weight of his bats in his 1924 book on hitting. This is very significant in our eyes, as this is the first Sisler game bat that we have found that actually matches these specifications. In fact, in searching auction records, we have been shocked at exactly how few pro-model Sisler bats of any specifications are actually out there. Sisler bats are rare. Check all auction records and you will find exactly what we found: real George Sisler bats are very few and far between. Of the fewer than ten auction records we found, this is the only example we were able to locate that featured these specifications. All of the others we found were shorter or lighter or both. This is an extraordinary and ideal George Sisler game bat, with the perfect specifications (which at 41 ounces was perfect only for him!) personally documented by Sisler at the peak of his career. By far the best Sisler bat we have ever offered, with no close second. LOA from Dave Bushing. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,500++. SOLD FOR $7,703
