1990 Don Mattingly New York Yankees Signed Game-Used Road Jersey with 1989 Game-Used Pants
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,851
New York Yankees road jersey worn by first baseman Don Mattingly in 1990. Together with a pair of New York Yankees road pants worn by Mattingly the previous season in 1989. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" on the front and features the number "23" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in navy on white tackle twill. Mattingly's name, the year, and the set number ("Mattingly 90 1") are chain-stitched in navy upon a gray strip tag in the collar. A "Wilson" label, a "42" size tag, and a flag tag reading "1 inch sleeve opening" appear on the left front tail. The number "1" has been appliquéd in navy tackle twill on the left sleeve in remembrance of Billy Martin, who passed away that year. Mattingly has signed the jersey in black marker (grading "8") on the upper left breast. Located in the waistband of the matching gray knit pants are a "Wilson" label and adjacent size tag reading "33 Tapered." Mattingly's name, the year, the set number, and the inseam measurement ("Mattingly 89 3 27") are chain-stitched in navy upon a gray strip tag in the waistband, directly next to the manufacturer's label. The number "66" is written in black marker at the front of the waist band (possibly indicating that the pants were later used in the minor leagues). Both garments are original and unaltered, displaying moderate use throughout. Between the years 1984 and 1989 there were few players in the game that were better than "Donny Baseball." Mattingly batted over .300 in each of those six seasons, including a league-high .343 in 1984 and a career-high .352 in 1986. He also averaged 27 home runs and 114 RBI during that span. Unfortunately, a back injury suffered in 1990 (the year of this jersey) severely affected his plate performance during his final years, thereby curtailing what would have been a certain Hall of Fame career. Still, his achievements and honors are many: an MVP Award, a batting title, six consecutive All-Star Game appearances, and nine Gold Glove Awards. When Mattingly retired after the 1995 season he did so as the Yankees single-season record holder in both hits (238) and doubles (53). He also ranks in the Yankees all-time top-ten list in a multitude of offensive categories, including batting average (.307), games played (1,785), at bats (7,003), runs scored (1,007), hits (2,153), total bases (3,301), doubles (442), singles (1,469), and RBI (1,009). Ideally, this uniform ensemble has been consigned directly from the personal collection of extremely respected Yankees jersey expert and collector Jim Caravello (who has specialized in collecting Yankees jerseys and bats for the past 25 years, and is also one of the highly respected resident experts of gameuseduniverse.com), and is accompanied by a detailed one-page letter from him attesting to its authenticity. LOAs from Jim Caravello and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $3,851
