1974 Pete Rose Signed Cincinnati Reds Game-Used Home Jersey with 1975 Pants

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,925

Cincinnati Reds home jersey worn by Pete Rose during the 1974 season. The white knit jersey features the club's embroidered red-and-white logo on the left breast and the number "14" on both the right breast and reverse. "Rose" is lettered on the reverse directly above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in red tackle twill. Located on the interior right front tail are a "Rawlings 42" label and an adjacent flag tag reading "Set 2 #8P 1974." Rose has inscribed the jersey in black marker (grading "8") on the front, just below the logo: "Pete Rose/Hit King/#4256." Accompanying the jersey is a pair of Cincinnati Reds home pants worn by Rose in 1975. The pants feature a red/white/red trim along the waist and three buttons. A "Rawlings 32" label appears in the waistband, below which is a white strip tag featuring Rose's uniform number, size, inseam, year, and set number ("14 33 24 75 3") chain-stitched in red. (Normally, manufacturer's labels were only issued in even sizes. When a player was an odd size, such as Rose's "33" here, the manufacturer simply placed the next closest size label they had in the garment.) Rose has also signed the pants in black marker (grading "8/9") on the right leg: "Pete Rose/Hit King/#4256." Both garments are all original, with no alterations, and display moderate wear, including a small tear on the rear of the pants. Rose tallied 185 of his eventual record 4,256 hits in 1974 while leading the League in both runs (110) and doubles (45). He finished the year with 3 home runs, 51 RBI and a .284 average. Playing in his final season as a full-time outfielder, he also led his position in fielding percentage (.997). Early 1970s Pete Rose Cincinnati Reds home knit jerseys are scarce. The offered garment is not only an exemplary jersey dating from the height of his career as the leader of Cincinnati's "Big Red Machine," but an outstanding display piece as well, given the boldly scripted inscription. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $4,000+. SOLD FOR $5,925
