1935 Babe Ruth Quaker Oats Advertising Display
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $3,555
This beautiful full-color cardboard advertising sign (20 x 15 inches), which was intended for retail display, features Babe Ruth endorsing Quaker Oats' Puffed Wheat and Puffed Rice cereals. The sign features a colorized photo of Ruth as he encourages kids to redeem their box tops for one of the many prizes shown: baseball caps, baseballs, instructional booklets, and an umpire scorer. In the mid 1930s, several similar Quaker Oats signs featuring its star endorser, Babe Ruth, were produced for display in grocery stores. This is a particularly rare style among the several different varieties. All are classics. Many collectors feel these signs are among the best values of all Babe Ruth and 1930s baseball advertising displays. We agree. Today, these signs occasionally surface, probably because they are so substantial and attractive that even in the early 1930s they looked like they were worth saving. They are very rarely found without condition problems of some type, and most examples we have seen have benefitted from professional restoration. This example is no exception. The restoration, which is mainly in the blue border areas (most notably to two large diagonal tears in the upper right), has been professionally executed and the piece now displays much as it did when originally issued. This is an exceptional example of one of the most classic and substantial store display pieces of the era, featuring Babe Ruth. Mounted (by means of photo corners) and framed to total dimensions of 25 x 20 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $3,555
