1907 Wolverine News Detroit Tigers Postcard Collection Including Ty Cobb Rookie (15)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,629
Collection of fifteen 1907 Wolverine News Detroit Tigers Postcards (15 different of the 20 in the set plus one 1907 Tigers team card, for a total of 16 postcards), highlighted by Hall of Famers Ty Cobb, Sam Crawford (two different poses), and Hughie Jennings. Produced by the Wolverine News Company to commemorate the Tigers' participation in the 1907 World Series, this is a particularly interesting set in that it includes one of Ty Cobb's true rookie cards. This card (along with the Dietsche postcard of Cobb issued in the same year) is considered by many collectors to be Ty Cobb's true rookie card. A number of other issues can also lay claim to that important distinction. While we realize that the definition of what is a player's rookie card can sometimes be very controversial and can vary from collector to collector, the postcard issues of 1907 are worthy of consideration for that claim, a distinction that is reasonably shared with several issues dating from Cobb's earliest days in the Majors. We selected three cards to be graded by SGC. The collection is comprised of the following: Ty Cobb/at bat (SGC VG 40), Coughlin (Vg-Ex), Sam Crawford/bunting (SGC EX 60), Sam Crawford/center fielder (SGC EX 60), Donovan/pitching (Vg), Downs (Vg-Ex), Hughie Jennings/coaching line (Vg/Vg-Ex), Jones (Ex), Killian (Vg), Mullin (Ex), O'Leary (Vg-Ex/Ex), Rossman (Vg-Ex), Schaefer (Vg), Schaefer & O'Leary (Vg-Ex), Schmidt (Ex), and 1907 Detroit team (Vg). None of the cards has been mailed and there is no writing on their traditional postcard reverses. Dimensions: 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Total: 16 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $5,629
