Christy Mathewson Children's Book Illustration - Original Painting by Jim Burke
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,740
Original oil-on-board painting by Jim Burke used as a two-page interior illustration for the book Take Me Out to the Ballgame (Little, Brown and Company, New York, 2006). Signed by the artist in the lower left corner. The painting captures Giants ace Christy Mathewson on the mound at the Polo Grounds against the Chicago Cubs.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame, written and illustrated by Jim Burke, is an annotated version of the classic baseball song of the same name, written in 1908 by Jack Norwith and Albert Von Tilzer. In addition to providing both interesting historical and anecdotal information regarding the song, the book also chronicles the career of the game's most revered player at the time: Christy Mathewson. Featuring page after page of stunning baseball illustrations created by Burke, the book parallels the creation of the song in 1908 with the remarkable pennant race waged that season between the Giants and Cubs. The offered painting was used as the premier illustration in the book and is featured fully on its two center pages. This is a stunning piece and one of the most remarkable and evocative baseball artworks we have ever offered. As a point of reference, Robert Edward Auctions featured the original painting used for the back-cover illustration to Take Me Out to the Ballgame in our May 2011 auction. The painting appeared as Lot 1315 and realized a final sales price of $6,463.
