1923 New York Giants (vs. Yankees) World Series Program - Yankees First World Championship

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $948

Historic 1923 World Series program commemorating the New York Yankees first-ever World Championship. The fact that 1923 was the first year of Yankee Stadium also naturally adds to its great significance. The cover, which incorporates the same design elements as the previous two World Series programs (the Yankees and Giants met in both the 1921 and 1922 World Series), features portrait images of the two opposing managers: John McGraw of the Giants and Miller Huggins of the Yankees. The fact that McGraw's portrait is to the left of Huggins' denotes this program as having been issued at the Polo Grounds for either Game 2, 4, or 6. (Each program issued for the 1923 World Series was identical save for the placement of the portrait images on the cover: the home team's manager was always positioned to the left.) The large-format twenty-page program features interior portrait images of members of both the Yankees and Giants, as well as various team and league officials, and has not been scored. After losing the World Series to the Giants in 1921 and 1922 the Yankees finally exacted their revenge in 1923. With the help of three Babe Ruth home runs, the Yankees defeated their cross-town rivals in six games to capture the club's first World Championship in franchise history. Game 6 of the Series took place at the Polo Grounds; therefore this program has a one-in-three chance of having been issued for that historic Series-clinching contest. The program (9.25 x 11 inches) displays a vertical center fold and partial separation (along the bottom staple) to four interior pages. A few minor creases and edge tears are evident on the front cover. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200. SOLD FOR $948
