Two Topps 50th Anniversary Presentation Sets in Their Original Wood Presentation Cases (Ex-Sy Berger)

Starting Bid - $100, Sold For - $2,644

Two rare Topps 50th Anniversary card presentation sets, each housed in its original wood presentation case bearing the Topps Anniversary logo on the top, issued in 2001. These sets originate directly from the personal collection of former Topps executive Sy Berger. They originally appeared as Lot 971 in REA's May 2010 auction, where they realized a final sales price of $1,410. The lot was purchased at that time by our consignor, who thought the sets would make a nice "investment" gift for each of his two sons. However, he was surprised when both of the boys stated that they would rather have the cash equivalent instead. So, in fulfillment of their wishes, he has reconsigned the presentation sets to this auction. Each presentation set contains fifty cards, still sealed in the original gold cardboard box. Each card set consists of fifty original Topps baseball cards spanning the years 1951 through 2001, one random, original card from each of Topps' standard sets issued during the company's first fifty years. We are not certain of the original distribution method of these special boxed sample-card sets. They may have been a special premium, or sold in exactly this manner, or given as special keepsakes to longtime Topps executives. How ever they were distributed, two things are certain: they were prepared by Topps as a very special item in honor of Topps' 50th anniversary of issuing baseball cards and these special boxed sets are rare today. As stated previously, these two examples originate from Sy Berger's personal collection and we can't imagine anyone who was more worthy to receive them than the "Father of the Bubble Gum Card." The cards inside are in an unknown presumably circulated condition. Both the gold cardboard boxes and wood presentation cases (6.5 x 5 x 3 inches) remain in Mint condition. Reserve $100. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,644
