1960 Topps Complete Set (494) with 60 PSA-Graded Cards

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406

90% range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt (averaging Nr/Mt), 10% Ex (with a few slightly lesser). This is a very crisp, high-grade complete set of 1960 Topps baseball. Of the 494 cards in the set, sixty (12%) have been professionally graded and encapsulated by PSA, including most of the key cards (Mantle, Aaron, Mays, Koufax, Clemente, etc.). Included are ten NM-MT 8s, twenty-eight NM 7s, fifteen EX-MT 6s, and seven EX 5s. This set was purchased in the year of issue by our consignor, an old-time collector, and has been stored in the closet for over forty years. The rookie cards of Hall of Famers Carl Yastrzemski and Willie McCovey highlight the 1960 Topps issue, which was Topps’ last horizontal issue. Many of the biggest stars in the set, including Mantle, Mays, and Aaron, appear in the set more than once due to the All-Star card series. Mantle actually has three cards in this set, as he also appears on the #160 "Rival All-Stars" card with Ken Boyer. The PSA grades are as follows: Ten NM-MT 8: #22, 62, 104, 229, 314, 327, 445 Spahn (OC), 538, 545, and 560 Banks AS. Twenty-eight NM 7: #10 Banks (OC), 16, 20, 31, 35 Ford, 54, 65, 66, 71, 73 Gibson (OC), 76, 84, 100 Fox, 231, 232, 240 Aparicio, 250 Musial, 295 Hodges, 326 Clemente, 372, 441, 486, 490 F. Robinson (OC), 555 FOX AS, 558 Mathews AS, 561 Kaline AS, 564 Mays AS, and 570 Drysdale AS. Fifteen EX-MT 6: #7 Mays/Rigney, 28 B. Robinson, 39, 63, 160 Mantle/Boyer, 210 Killebrew, 300 Aaron, 316 McCovey RC, 343 Koufax, 377 Maris, 406, 480 Berra, 554 McCovey AS, 563 Mantle AS, and 566 Aaron AS. Seven EX 5: #148 Yastrzemski RC, 200 Mays, 332 Yankees team, 350 Mantle (OC), 475 Drysdale, 493 Snider, and 565 Maris AS. Ungraded Keys: #1 Wynn (Ex), 18 Dodgers team (Ex-Mt), 50 Kaline (Nr/Mt), and 420 Mathews (80/20 T/B, otherwise Nr/Mt). The condition of the 434 cards which have not been encapsulated range from Ex to Nr/Mt, averaging Ex-Mt overall. It is expensive to encapsulate a complete set with hundreds of cards, but the consignor did make the investment of grading sixty cards, which for a set that is not entirely graded is an extremely substantial selection. Complete 1960 Topps sets show up with far less frequency than many other sets from the era. This is a beautiful high-grade set, very crisp, clean, and attractive across the board, and, in addition to all the special cards and scarce high numbers (#507-572), it is loaded with Hall of Famers and stars from the 1960s. Aside from a few centering problems here and there, this set has a Near Mint appearance throughout. The SMR value for just the fifty-five graded cards (not including the five qualified cards including Mantle and the 434 ungraded cards) is $2,293. Total: 494 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
