1951 to 1967 Baseball Card Collection of Regional and Unusual Issues (420 cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,581

Eclectic group of 420 regional and unusual cards, spanning the years 1951 through 1967, highlighted by many Hall of Famers and stars, and representing twelve different issues. This is a tremendous group of unusual vintage cards, mostly comprised of overlooked and undervalued "oddball" issues, with many highlights. Assembled by an old-time collector (whose complete sets of Topps and Bowmans are presented separately in this auction), this lot represents the various unusual issues of the collection, and is comprised of the following: 1) 1951 Topps Connie Mack’s All-Stars (2 cards): J. Collins and Speaker. Each card technically grades Pr due to missing the red die-cut background pieces. 2) 1951 Topps Major League All-Stars (5 cards): Berra (torn in half), Doby, Evers, Kell, and Lemon. Each card technically grades Pr due to the missing red die-cut background pieces. 3) 1951 Topps Team Cards (3 cards): Chicago White Sox (Vg), Philadelphia Athletics (Fr), and Washington Senators (Gd). All undated variations. 4) 1952 Berk Ross (63 of 72 cards): 75% Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), 25% Vg (includes a few slightly lesser). Keys: Ashburn (Vg/Vg-Ex), Berra (Ex-Mt), Blackwell (Ex), Campanella (Ex-Mt), Doby (Ex), Doerr (Ex), Feller (Ex), Fox (Ex), Irvin (99/1 T/B, otherwise Vg-Ex), Kell (Ex), Martin (Ex), Mays (20/80 T/B, otherwise Ex), Mize (Ex), Musial (Vg), Reese (Ex), Rizzuto/bunting (Gd), Rizzuto/swinging (10/90 T/B, otherwise Ex), Roberts (Ex), Schoendienst (Ex-Mt), Snider (Ex-Mt), and Williams (Vg-Ex/Ex). 5) 1954 NY Journal-American (34 of 59 cards): 70% Vg to Vg-Ex, 30% Gd (includes a few slightly lesser). Keys: Campanella (Vg-Ex), Ford (Vg), Hodges (Vg), Irvin (Gd), Mantle (Vg/Vg-Ex), Reese (tiny tear on the right edge, otherwise Vg-Ex), and Snider (Vg+). 6) 1954 Red Heart Dog Food (1 card): Mantle (Vg-Ex). 7) 1955 Rawlings Stan Musial complete set (6 cards): This rare set was hand cut from boxes of Rawlings baseball gloves endorsed by Musial. Vg overall. 8) 1960 Lake to Lake Dairy Braves (7 cards): Buhl, Cottier, Crandall, Dressen, Giggie, Logan, and Schoendienst. All of the cards grade Nr/Mt or better. These cards were almost certainly purchased in the 1960s from hobby pioneer Bruce Yeko’s Wholesale Card Company. In the 1960s Yeko somehow obtained a significant quantity of nine different Lake to Lake cards which he offered for years through his fixed-price catalog in the early days of the hobby. Most of the card-collecting world’s high-grade 1960 Lake to Lake Dairy Braves can be traced back to Yeko. 9) 1961 Morrell Meats Dodgers complete set (6 cards): Davis (Ex), Drysdale (Ex-Mt), Howard (Ex), Koufax (Nr/Mt), Larker (Ex), and Wills (Ex). 10) 1961 Nu-Card Baseball Scoops complete set (80 cards): Nr/Mt overall (one lesser, #401). 11) 1961 Post Cereal (172 of 200 cards): This near-complete set was assembled from "company" cards (except twelve are "box" cards). Condition ranges from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex) with a few cards slightly lesser. Keys: #1 Berra (Gd), 4 Mantle (Ex), 35 Kaline (Ex), 75 Robinson (Ex), 106 Mathews (Ex), 107 Aaron (Ex), 132 Clemente (Ex), 145 Mays (Ex), 147 McCovey (Ex), 167 Snider (Ex), and 191 Banks (Ex). 12) 1967 Kahn’s complete set (41 cards): 90% range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 10% slightly lesser, all cards complete with tabs. Keys: Aaron - large (Ex-Mt), Mazeroski (Nr/Mt-Mt), Perez (Nr/Mt-Mt), Rose (Ex-Mt), and Stargell (Ex-Mt). A fascinating array of regional and unusual cards, including many highlights, from the golden years of baseball cards. Total: 420 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,581
