1952 Topps Complete Set (407) Including #311 Mantle PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $10,000, Sold For - $44,063

1952 Topps complete set of 407 cards. This is an extremely attractive, very carefully assembled, very clean, fairly high grade set, rarely offered so nice as a complete set, with many rare high numbers and most key cards in particularly high grade. While the condition of cards from this set spans several grades, even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This set is highlighted by a very attractive example of key card #311 Mickey Mantle (Graded EX 5 by PSA), universally recognized as one of card collecting's most famous and valuable classics. The low numbers (#1-310) grade as follows: 70% range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex overall), 25% Vg (with a few slightly lesser), and 5% trimmed. The rare high numbers (#311-407) grade as follows: 85% range from Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few Nr/Mt), and 15% lesser (mostly Vg-Ex and includes a couple trimmed). We have selected sixteen cards to be graded by SGC; fifty-two cards were already graded by PSA and ten cards were already graded by SGC (except one GAI) when we received the set. Low-Number Keys (1-310): #1 Pafko (SGC VG 40), 2 Runnels (Vg), 11 Rizzuto (SGC VG 40, black back), 20 Loes RC (Vg/Vg-Ex), 22 DiMaggio (Vg-Ex, black back), 26 Irvin (Ex/Ex-Mt, black back), 29 Kluszewski (Vg-Ex/Ex, black back), 33 Spahn (SGC VG 40, black back), 36 Hodges (SGC VG/EX 50, black back), 37 Snider (SGC VG/EX 50, black back), 48 Page/correct (color retouch on the left picture frame, otherwise Ex-Mt, black back), 49 Sain/correct (PSA NM 7 [MK], black back), 57 Lopat (Ex, black back), 59 Roberts (Ex, black back), 65 Slaughter (Vg-Ex/Ex, black back), 66 Roe (Ex, black back), 67 Reynolds (SGC EX 60, black back), 88 Feller (SGC NM 84), 91 Schoendienst (Vg-Ex/Ex), 122 Jensen (Ex), 129 Mize (Ex), 175 Martin RC (SGC VG/EX 50), 191 Berra (SGC VG 40), 195 Minoso RC (Ex/Ex-Mt), 215 Bauer (Ex), 216 Ashburn (Nr/Mt), 227 Garagiola (Ex), 243 Doby (Ex), 246 Kell (Vg), 250 Erskine (touch of paper loss on back, otherwise Ex-Mt), 261 Mays (SGC EX 60), 268 Lemon (PSA EX 5), 274 Branca (Vg-Ex/Ex), and 277 Wynn (indentation on Wynn's face, otherwise Nr/Mt). Twenty EX 5: #317, 319, 323 (SGC EX 60), 325, 340, 341, 345, 346, 352 (SGC EX 60), 358, 363, 366, 380, 381 (SGC EX+ 70), 385 (SGC EX+ 70), 388, 389, 391 (SGC EX 60), 393, and 398. The amazing thing about a quality mid- to high-grade 1952 Topps set such as this is the outstanding value it offers compared to cards in higher grade, as well as the comfort provided by the natural potential "break value" associated with such a set. This is a rarely offered, exceptionally clean and crisp, extremely strong mid- to high-grade complete set of one of baseball-card collecting's premier issues, with numerous significant highlights. The equivalent SMR value for just the three NM 7s, eighteen EX-MT 6s, and forty-seven EX 5s in this set is $35,365. This total is for just sixty-eight cards, and does not include the one qualified card, four VG-EX 4s, five VG 3s, and 329 additional ungraded cards, including 38 rare high numbers. Total: 407 cards. Reserve $10,000. Estimate $20,000/$40,000+. SOLD FOR $44,063
