1951 Topps Blue and Red Backs Complete Set Collection (2 Sets, 105 Cards)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293
The 1951 Red and Blue Back sets are extremely significant as these were the first major baseball-card sets ever issued by Topps. Offered as a single lot are complete sets of both the 1951 Topps Red Backs and 1951 Topps Blue Backs, each with 52 cards plus one Red Back variation, for a total of 105 cards. 1) 1951 Topps Red Back (53): Twenty-eight cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex-Mt (averaging Ex), eighteen cards are Vg, and seven are lesser. Keys: #1 Berra (Vg), 5 Rizzuto (Vg), 6 Reynolds (Ex-Mt), 8 Wynn (Ex-Mt), 15 Kiner (Ex-Mt), 16 Roe (Ex), 20 DiMaggio (Fr), 22 Feller (Gd-Vg), 24 Bauer (Vg), 30 Spahn (Ex-Mt), 31 Hodges (Vg-Ex), 38 Snider (Vg), 39 Kluszewski (Vg), 50 Irvin (Vg), 52A Holmes/Hart. (Vg). 2) 1951 Topps Blue Back (52): Thirty-three cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few slightly better), sixteen cards are Vg, and three are lesser. Keys: #1 Yost (Vg-Ex), 3 Ashburn (Vg), 6 Schoendienst (Ex-Mt), 9 Sain (Gd), 10 Page (Vg), 20 Branca (Ex-Mt), 30 Slaughter (Ex), 37 Doerr (Vg), 39 Lopat (Vg/Vg-Ex), 45 Pierce (Gd), 50 Mize (Vg-Ex/Ex), 52 Chapman (Vg). Though the cards in these sets are technically in varying grades, across the board the cards certainly have a bright, fresh, clean appearance, and one that is far superior to the technically assigned grades. These are extremely attractive (relatively modestly valued) sets! The 1951 Red and Blue Back Topps sets are among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represent an extraordinary value. Accompanied by an original one-cent wrapper. Total: 105 cards plus one wrapper. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800. SOLD FOR $1,293
