1951 Topps Blue and Red Backs Complete Set Collection (2 Sets, 104 Cards)

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $940

The 1951 Red and Blue Back sets are extremely significant as these were the first major baseball-card sets ever issued by Topps. Offered as a single lot are complete sets of both the 1951 Topps Red Backs and 1951 Topps Blue Backs, each with 52 cards, for a total of 104 cards. 1) 1951 Topps Red Back (52): Twenty-nine cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex, eighteen cards are Vg, and five are lesser. Keys: #1 Berra (Gd), 5 Rizzuto (Vg-Ex/Ex), 6 Reynolds (Vg-Ex/Ex), 8 Wynn (Vg-Ex/Ex), 15 Kiner (Vg), 16 Roe (Vg-Ex/Ex), 20 DiMaggio (Vg-Ex), 22 Feller (Vg), 24 Bauer (Vg-Ex), 30 Spahn (Vg-Ex), 31 Hodges (Fr-Gd), 38 Snider (Vg/Vg-Ex), 39 Kluszewski (Vg-Ex), 50 Irvin (Vg-Ex), 52A Holmes/Hart. (Gd). 2) 1951 Topps Blue Back (52): Thirty-three cards range from Vg-Ex to Ex (with a few slightly better), fourteen cards are Vg, and five are lesser. Keys: #1 Yost (Vg-Ex), 3 Ashburn (Vg-Ex), 6 Schoendienst (Ex), 9 Sain (Vg-Ex), 10 Page (Vg-Ex/Ex), 20 Branca (Vg-Ex), 30 Slaughter (Vg-Ex/Ex), 37 Doerr (Vg), 39 Lopat (Vg-Ex), 45 Pierce (Ex), 50 Mize (Vg-Ex/Ex), 52 Chapman (Vg). Though the cards in these sets are in varying grades, across the board the cards certainly have a bright, fresh, clean appearance that is far superior to the technically assigned grades. These are extremely attractive (relatively modestly valued) sets! The 1951 Red and Blue Back Topps sets are among the most significant, yet overlooked, of all early Topps cards, and in our opinion represent an extraordinary value. Total: 104 cards. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
