1950s/1960s Major League Team-Issued Player Postcard Collection (135/295 Autographed)
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,880
Diverse collection of team-issued photographic postcards and postcard-sized photos, nearly all of which date to the 1950s and 1960s. These postcards and photos were produced by the respective Major League clubs for the purpose of responding to the many requests from fans for souvenir photos and/or signed photos. While it later became standard for most of these souvenir photos and postcards to have stamped facsimile signatures on the front, during the early years many of the players did actually sign them, as evidenced by the many autographed examples included here. This collection is comprised of 295 postcards/photos, 135 of which feature actual signatures on either the front or reverse (80 display facsimile signatures). Approximately twenty percent of the cards/photos are duplicates. Fifteen different Major League clubs are represented here, with the New York Yankees comprising the largest allotment (forty-nine cards/photos total, including a few by Louis Requena; sixteen autographed). A number of Hall of Fame players and notables, as well as a few "tough" signatures, are represented in the 135 signed cards (sometimes more than once and with different clubs), including Bob Elliott, Jim McGlothlin, Dick Fowler, Johnny Callison, Ted Kluszewski, Whitey Ford, Jim Bouton, Al Downing, Minnie Minoso, Ferris Fain, Jim Konstanty, Curt Simmons, Dean Chance, Dale Long, Bob Friend, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Pesky, Walt Dropo, Wes Ferrell, Don Sutton, Ralph Branca, Carl Erskine, Jim Hearn, Bobby Bragan, Tommy Holmes, Warren Spahn, Don Zimmer, and Joe Nuxhall. Signatures range from "1" to "10," averaging "6." This is a fascinating group. For collectors of Major League team postcards issued from the early 1950s to the 1960s, this is a substantial and completely unpicked group that no doubt has some hidden gems. The cards/photos are in Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,880
