Circa 1900 to 1915 Major League Baseball "Team" Postcard Collection (37)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $5,875
This assortment of thirty-seven mostly real-photo postcards was carefully culled from legendary postcard collector, author, and scholar Ron Menchine's vast collection (which is presented in numerous lots in this auction) and represents many of the best Major League "team" postcards found. What set these postcards apart was both their early dating (all but one appear to have been issued between the years 1900 and 1915) and the fact that most picture pennant-winning or World Championship clubs. As such, many Hall of Fame players are pictured here, including Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Frank Baker, Eddie Plank, Chief Bender, Johnny Evers, Frank Chance, Joe Tinker, Rube Waddell, Napoleon Lajoie, Ed Walsh, Christy Mathewson, and Joe McGinnity. Four outright duplicates are included here, as are seven "indirect" duplicates in that the exact same team image is used, but the design of the postcard is different. Included in the real-photo team postcards are images of the 1905 Philadelphia Athletics, the 1906 Chicago Cubs, the 1906 Chicago White Sox, the 1907 Detroit Tigers, the 1907 Cleveland Indians, the 1908 Pittsburgh Pirates, the 1910 Philadelphia Athletics, the 1912 Philadelphia Phillies, the 1915 New York Giants, and the 1945 Chicago Cubs (oversized example). In addition to the many real-photo postcards, the collection also includes six interesting examples that fall outside that realm: a circa 1907 Chicago White Sox leather postcard, a 1909 postcard issued during the World Series that features a scorecard on the front listing the lineups for the Tigers and Pirates (lightly scored for Game 2), three circa 1907 New York Giants "Greetings" box score postcards (each featuring the same six Giants players including Mathewson and McGinnity), and a 1909 Pirates World Championship postcard featuring a small felt pennant affixed to the front. Also included is a marvelous real-photo postcard dating from the 1914 World Tour picturing members of the New York Giants and Chicago White Sox, and their families, posing together (in street clothes) at the Vatican, in Italy, as well as two postcards (one standard size and one larger 5.5 x 6.5-inch postcard) featuring a colorized image of the Chicago White Sox posing in front of a train at the Royal Gorge in Colorado, circa 1911. All of the postcards can be viewed online. Fourteen of the postcards have been mailed. A number of postcards display vintage writing on the front and one of the 1906 White Sox postcards has been trimmed. Condition ranges from Fair to Excellent, averaging Very Good. This is an outstanding collection of quality postcards including many highlights, with each card special in some way to warrant inclusion here. From the Ron Menchine Collection. Total: 37 postcards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $5,875
