1927 E210 York Caramels Collection (35) Including Ruth and Gehrig
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $22,325
Collection of thirty-five different (of the sixty in the set) 1927 E210 York Caramels (Type 2) cards including an astounding twenty-two Hall of Famers, highlighted by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig. This is a very strong group that is new to the organized collecting world and that includes an extraordinarily impressive example of key card Babe Ruth. 50% range from Vg-Ex/Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a couple Nr/Mt), 40% are Vg to Vg-Ex, and 10% slightly lesser. We have selected six cards to be graded by SGC (all submitted by REA). Keys: #1 Grimes (Gd-Vg), 5 Hartnett (Vg-Ex), 6 Ruth (SGC EX 60; this beautiful example is perfectly clean, both front and back, with no creases, square corners, flawless contrast, and almost perfect centering; it is interesting to note that Ruth is actually pictured in a Boston Red Sox uniform on this card), 16 Rixey (Vg), 19 Bancroft (Vg), 20 Kelly (Gd), 21 Combs (Vg-Ex/Ex), 22 Heilmann (Ex), 23 Schalk (Vg-Ex), 25 Wilson rookie (Ex-Mt; actually pictured is Art Wilson), 26 Gehrig (SGC VG 40, the card has perfect clarity, four square corners, centered slightly to the top right, a light diagonal crease in the lower right and a tiny crease on the lower left border, and no caramel stains on the reverse), 28 Speaker (SGC NM 84), 29 Lazzeri (SGC EX 60), 36 Rice (Vg-Ex), 41 Harris (Vg-Ex/Ex), 42 McGraw (SGC VG/EX 50), 44 Alexander (Vg-Ex/Ex), 46 Terry rookie (Vg-Ex/Ex; actually pictured is Zeb Terry), 49 Goslin (Gd), 50 Frisch (Vg), 54 Sisler (SGC VG/EX 50), and 59 L. Waner (Vg). The balance of the collection consists of #3 Dugan, 7 Meusel, 9 Burns, 11 Uhle, 12 O'Farrell, 17 Mays, 24 Mostil, 37 Sheely, 39 Falk, 47 Wright, 51 J. Harris, 55 Rommel, and 58 Bell. York Caramels issued this unusual set in 1927. The set is identical in design to several other issues of the era, such as Tharps Ice Cream, Sweetman, and Harrington's Ice Cream, but with advertising for the "York Caramel Co." of York, Pennsylvania, on the reverse. Collectors have always appreciated the rarity and primitive charm of this distinctive candy issue. York Caramels appear to have been regionally issued, as they are rarely found outside of the Pennsylvania area. This is an extremely substantial and impressive group of these unusual and scarce 1920s cards, representing almost 60% of a complete set. Total: 35 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+.
