1921-1922 E121 American Caramel Collection (161) Including Two Ruths and Cobb Plus 37 W575 (198 total cards)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463

Extremely substantial collection of 150 different (plus eleven duplicates) E121 American Caramel cards (75 cards from Series 80 and 75 cards from Series 120), highlighted by forty Hall of Famers, including Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, two poses of Walter Johnson, and Rogers Hornsby. Condition varies, ranging from Pr to Vg (includes a few slightly trimmed). This advanced E121 collection was assembled long ago by a pioneer collector who was active for decades. This is a very substantial group of cards from one of the most important sets from the 1920s. 1) 1921 E121 American Caramel Series of 80 (75 of 121 cards plus six duplicates): including Alexander (right arm forward, Gd), two Baker (one with Standard Biscuit back, Vg and regular back Vg-Ex), Bancroft (batting, Gd), Carey (hands on hips, Gd), Collins (Vg), Evers (Mgr., Fr), Faber (dark uniform trimmed), Faber (white uniform, Pr), Hornsby (paper loss on back, otherwise Ex-Mt), Jennings (Vg/Vg-Ex), Johnson (throwing, trimmed), Johnson (hands at chest, stain on top, otherwise Ex), McGraw (Vg/Vg-Ex), Rice (Vg), Ruth (Pr, heavily worn), Schalk (Ex), Sisler (batting, Vg), Sisler (throwing, Gd), and Speaker (Manager, heavy back damage, otherwise Vg). Six cards have the Standard Biscuit Company advertisement on the reverse (and are therefore technically D350-3). 2) 1922 E121 American Caramel Series of 120 (75 of 127 cards plus five duplicates): Almost all of the cards have paper loss on the back from scrapbook removal. Includes: Bancroft (Fr), Carey (Fr), Cobb (paper loss on back, otherwise Ex-Mt), Coveleski (Fr), Faber (Fr), Frisch (Fr), Hooper (Fr), Hoyt (Fr), Huggins (Fr), Kelly (Fr), two Maranville (Gd and Fr), McGraw (Fr), Rixey (Fr), Roush (Fr), Schalk (catching, Gd), Schalk (batting, Fr), Speaker (Gd), Sisler (Fr), and Wheat (Fr). The condition varies but, as can easily be seen, most cards have an appearance far stronger than their modest technically accurate grades. Even the lowest-graded cards in most cases are very attractive, and a card such as the Ty Cobb is a beautiful card that could at a glance be mistaken for Ex-Mt (and has been downgraded due to paper loss on back). Large collections of E121 are rarely seen or offered. This collection could provide the foundation for the assembly of a complete set, or easily be broken up. The forty E121 Hall of Famers (including Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb) all alone, even in low grade, add up very quickly. Also included are thirty-seven additional cards (including Babe Ruth) from two other 1920s issues: 1) 1921-1922 W575-1 (26 different plus three duplicates): All have blank backs except five cards have the Witmor Candy Company advertisement on the back. Includes: Bancroft (Fr), Evers (Fr), Faber (Pr), Jennings (Witmor Candy back, Gd), Roush (Witmor Candy back, Pr), Ruth (Pr), and Wood (Gd). The remaining twenty-two cards range from Fr to Vg (with three Pr and two trimmed). 2) 1922 W575-2 “Autograph on Shoulder” (8 cards): Frisch (Vg/Vg-Ex), Hooper (Ex), Marquard (Ex), and Sisler (Pr-Fr). Of the remaining four cards, three grade Ex and one grades Vg. The entire collection includes fifty-one Hall of Famers (forty E121 HOFers plus eleven W575 HOFers). Total: 198 cards (161 E121s, 29 W575-1s, and eight W575-2s). Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
