1921 Schapira Bros. Candy Babe Ruth (portrait) - SGC NM/MT+ 92

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $705

Graded NM/MT+ 92 by SGC. Highest-graded example by SGC! In fact, of the forty-seven examples graded to date, the next highest-graded example in the SGC population report is NM 84. Schapira Brothers, Inc., candy-box package-design portrait card featuring a crisp image of a smiling Babe Ruth within a baseball design, surrounded by a fire engine red background, neatly cut along the dotted lines, with four sharp corners. The reverse is perfectly clean. One of Babe Ruth's all time classic cards. This is the signature card from a very unusual and fascinating candy-box set devoted exclusively to Babe Ruth. Each card from the set measures 1-5/8 x 2-3/8 inches and features Ruth. The portrait card appeared on one side of every box; the other side featured one of five different full-length "action" cards with artwork that is clearly based on photos of Ruth. The portrait card is the only card in the set that identifies Ruth by name and provides instructions to "Send 250 of these pictures to Schapira Bros. Inc. E. 135th St. New York City" to "Get a Base Ball Autographed By Babe Ruth." There are few cards of Ruth dating from the 1920s. This is one of the most distinctive and interesting 1920s Ruth cards, and due to its method of issue, is very rarely found in high grade. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
