1919-1921 W514 SGC-Graded Complete Set (120)

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $9,400

Presented is an extraordinary high-grade complete set of 120 W514 strip cards, entirely graded by SGC. This is an incredible set! Remarkably, this is an original-owner collection of W514s saved by the grandfather of our consignor. When the set arrived, we were so overwhelmed with the across-the-board pristine condition that we elected to submit the entire set for grading. That's how incredible this set is (and our assessment we believe would be shared by anyone and has been more than confirmed by the grades received as can be seen below). The W514 set includes twenty-eight Hall of Famers and seven of the eight Chicago "Black Sox," who were banned from baseball for their role in throwing the 1919 World Series. The W514 set is the largest and most widely collected of the various strip card issues of the era. SGC is notoriously hard on "strip cards." Strip cards, of course, are by definition hand-cut, as intended. The ever so slightly irregular cuts characteristic to the issue, which often affect a small portion of the cutting guidelines, are the primary cause of the harsh downgrading by SGC for most cards in this set, especially those encapsulated as Authentic. The offered complete set of W514 is the finest we have ever seen or offered (which is really saying something, as in 2005 REA handled the largest collection of W514 to ever be assembled, an extraordinary accumulation of over 1,000 cards including five complete sets; this set is far better than even the best set that could be assembled from all the cards of that historic offering!), with virtually all cards presenting even nicer than suggested by the extremely strong grades received. SGC Condition Report Composite: 53% range from Excellent condition to Nr/Mt-Mt condition, 11% range from Good condition to Vg-Ex condition, and 36% are encapsulated as Authentic.
