1923 W572 Strip-Card Collection Including Ruth and Cobb (101/121)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,233

This 1923 W572 strip-card collection of 101 different players (out of 121 in the set) is highlighted by twenty-six Hall of Famers, including Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, and Walter Johnson. The 1923 W572 series is one of the most substantial and overlooked sets from the 1920s. Very few comprehensive baseball-card sets featuring 100+ players were issued in the early 1920s. This is one of the few. This classic 1920-era strip-card issue includes many of the great stars and Hall of Famers of the decade. These cards were originally issued in ten-card strips. This is a very large collection for this issue, missing only twenty cards for completion (#2, 5, 9, 12, 13, 26, 34, 35, 42 Heilmann, 59, 70, 75, 82, 83, 85, 95 Sewell, 99, 106, 113, and 120). Numbers referenced are provided by the Standard Catalog checklist. Keys: Alexander (Gd), Bancroft (Vg), Cobb (Vg) , Collins (Vg-Ex), Coveleski (Vg-Ex), Faber (Ex), Frisch (Pr), Grimes (Ex), Harris (Pr), Hooper (Fr), Hornsby (Vg-Ex), Hoyt (Gd), Johnson (back damage, otherwise Ex-Mt), Kelly (Pr), Maranville (irregular cut, otherwise Vg-Ex), Marquard (Fr), Rice (Gd-Vg), Rixey (Vg), Roush (Ex), Ruth (Fr) , Schalk (Vg), Sisler (irregular cut, otherwise Ex), Speaker (Vg-Ex), Southworth (Ex-Mt), Traynor (Fr-Gd), and Wheat (Gd). The balance of the cards grade as follows: forty-two cards range in grade from Vg to Ex (includes a few slightly better), and thirty-three range from Pr to Gd (mostly Fr). The condition of this group spans many grades, as can be seen, but includes many highlights. This is a very substantial collection, representing 83% of a complete set. Large collections of W572s are rarely seen or offered. Also included are twenty-eight additional cards from three other 1920s issues: 1) 1928 W502 (23 cards): including #1 Grimes (Gd), 4 Faber (Ex-Mt), 10 Sewell (no top border, otherwise Ex), 14 Traynor (Ex-Mt), 16 Rixey (Pr), 21 Combs (Pr), two 23 Schalk (Ex and Pr), two 32 Carey (Ex and Pr), 50 Frisch (Pr), and 53 Roush (Ex). The remaining eleven cards grade as follows: nine are Ex to Ex-Mt, two are Pr; 2) 1928 Harrington's Ice Cream (3 cards): #3 (Gd), 36 Rice (Ex), and 52 (Fr); 3) 1928 Tharpe's Ice Cream (2 cards): #43 (Pr) and 59 L. Waner (Pr). Total: 129 cards (near set of 101 W572s, 23 W502s, three Harrington's, and two Tharpe's). Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $2,233
