1888 A16 Allen Ginter World's Champions Album and N43 Sample Card
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,233
Two classic nineteenth-century card and card-related items issued by Allen & Ginter: 1) First Series 1888 A16 Allen & Ginter Premium Album features images of all fifty cards from the N28 Allen & Ginter set (including Anson, Kelly, Clarkson, Comiskey, etc.). The interior pages are virtually flawless (except two pages each have pencil marks on one of the subjects). Some light corner and edge wear. The cover has some tearing at the binding holes (which is very common with tobacco albums and does not affect the interior pages), an ink mark on the front cover that touches the bottom of Ward's image, and a few light creases on the reverse cover, otherwise in Excellent condition and still even has the original binding string which has obviously never been disturbed. 2) N43 Allen & Ginter tobacco card. This sample features Jas. H. Fogarty, right fielder of the Philadelphia Nationals. N43s feature the same subjects and designs as the smaller N29 second series Allen & Ginters, but in a larger format and with extra artwork complimenting the larger design. Measuring approximately 3 x 3.25 inches, the large-format N43 Allen & Ginters are widely recognized as one of the most attractive sets ever issued. This is a very a attractive sample from this popular set, featuring one of the six baseball players in the series (the other subjects in the set feature stars from other sports). The front of this card is in Excellent condition. It is bright, fresh, and clean, with vibrant colors, and with only the slightest hint of wear to the four square corners. This card is technically in low grade due to the reverse having light glue staining and small areas of surface paper loss from long ago being mounted in an album and later removed. This is a very attractive pair of these key pre-1900 classics. Total: 2 items. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $2,233
