1916 M101-5 Sporting News Extraordinary Rarities Collection (3)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $35,250
Presented is a very rare and possibly unique opportunity to acquire three extreme rarities from the M101-5 series. The M101-4 and M101-5 Sporting News sets are traditionally thought of as being pretty straightforward. There are some incredibly rare advertising back varieties, and these are extremely popular with collectors, but the fronts are generally considered to be of a similar scarcity in the two sets. There are no rare cards or pose variations - WITH SEVERAL NOTABLE EXCEPTIONS. For reasons unknown, three of the numbered cards in the M101-5 series (#12, 23, and 186) are known to feature two completely different players and poses. These extreme rarities are referred to in the M101-4/5 checklists as "short prints." Presented is a collection of all three of these extremely rare short prints. Each card has been graded and encapsulated POOR 10 by SGC. All three blank-back cards appear in Good condition from the front, but have been downgraded due to heavy back damage. The lot consists of the following: #12 Beals Becker, 23 Forrest Cady (issued as card number #25 in the M101-4 set), and 186 Bobby Wallace. To be clear, regarding the nature of these rarities: Card #12 is almost never Beals Becker; it is almost always Lute Boone. Card #186 is usually not Bobby Wallace at all. It is almost always Zach Wheat. Card #23 is almost never Forrest Cady; it is almost always Mordecai Brown (although in the case of Forrest Cady, he does appear in the M101-4 set as card number 25, whereas Bobby Wallace and Beals Becker simply do not appear in the M101-4 set at all; it's these cards or nothing for these players in the M101-4/5 sets). We know it's a little confusing. We hope we have explained this properly! These extreme rarities are so rare they are virtually unknown even to many collectors of this set. Each of these there cards is far rarer than a T206 Wagner. In fact, each of these cards is far rarer than just about any other card from any other set! These are the first examples of each of these cards we have ever offered. This is a unique opportunity to acquire at one time all three of these virtually impossible-to-obtain M101-5 rarities. Total: 3 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $35,250
