1914 Zeenut PCL Near-Complete Set (137/150) Including Bancroft

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050

Near-complete set of 139 different (137 of the 150 in set as checklisted in The Standard Catalog plus two not checklisted) 1914 Zeenut cards featuring Pacific Coast League players, highlighted by Hall of Famer Dave Bancroft (Good condition). Two cards (Corhan and Harkness - throwing) included are not listed in the 2011 Standard Catalog checklist but are known by advanced collectors. Missing just thirteen cards for completion of all subjects listed in the Standard Catalog (Arellanes, Bliss/large pose, Brenegan, Calvo, Carlisle, Derrick, Harkness/batting, Hosp/large pose, Leard/small pose, Pape, Ramey/correct, Rieger, and Ryan). The 1914 Zeenut set is comprised of players from six different teams (Los Angeles, Oakland, Portland, Sacramento, San Francisco, and Venice/Vernon), and is considered by many to be among the rarest of all Zeenut series. A near-complete set such as this is very rarely seen. This is the first time we have ever offered even a large group, let alone a near-set of 1914 Zeenuts. 50% of the cards range from Vg to Vg-Ex (with a few Ex), and 50% range from Pr to Gd-Vg. As is usually the case with Zeenuts, the coupon at the bottom of each card has been neatly clipped away, as intended, to be redeemed for valuable prizes. Also as is usually the case with Zeenuts, most of the cards have a far superior appearance than suggested by their technically accurate modest grades. This "comes with the territory" with Zeenuts. This 1914 Zeenut near-complete set is part of an extraordinary comprehensive Zeenut collection, the finest we have ever handled. The collection was assembled over a period of many years by an extremely advanced pioneer collector, and has been broken down by year into a number of smaller but still very substantial lots. Total: 139 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $7,050
