1911 M116 Sporting Life SGC-Graded Collection Including Wagner (7)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644
Collection of six key Hall of Famers and one major star (all pastel variations) from the 1911 M116 Sporting Life set. All seven cards have been graded and encapsulated by SGC (all submitted by REA): Chance (VG 40, rare "Over 300 Subjects" back), Chase (EX 60, rare "Over 300 Subjects" back), Evers (EX 60), Lajoie (GOOD 30, downgraded for a heavy crease across the top), Mathewson (Authentic; no numerical grade because of a slight trim, rare "Over 300 Subjects" back), Tinker (EX 60), and Wagner (GOOD 30, rare "Over 300 Subjects" back). Each card is bright and crisp, clean both front and back, and with boldly printed reverses (except Wagner has a moisture stain on the front). These cards are from a small but remarkable childhood collection of our consignor’s grandfather that includes a complete set of six M110s and eight M116s (the Cobb because of its high grade is offered separately in this auction). The cards have been carefully stored by the family since 1911! Many collectors consider M116 one of the era's most exceptional values. Despite being so similar in design to their T206 counterparts, M116s in general are actually far rarer. In comparing the price guide values of M116s and T206 cards of the same Hall of Famers in the same grades, it is hard not to appreciate the outstanding value of the seven high-quality Sporting Life cards in this lot. The SMR value for the group (not including the one Authentic of Mathewson) is $1,410. Total: 7 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $2,644
