1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Christy Mathewson

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $4,994

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Presented is Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson, one of the key cards from the extremely rare M110 Sporting Life cabinet set issued in 1911. This is one of six M110s that were among the highlights of a small but remarkable childhood collection of our consignor’s grandfather that included a complete set of six M110s and eight M116s. These cards have been carefully stored by the family since 1911! All are new to the organized collecting world and are presented in a total of eight lots in this auction. Each card in the M110 set features beautiful full-color pastel artwork on the front and advertising for Sporting Life on the reverse. M110s are similar in design to, but far rarer than, the contemporary T3 Turkey Red cabinets. This one of the rarest and most beautiful of all Christy Mathewson cards. Technically graded GOOD by SGC (due to light foxing on the border in the lower left and surface wear on the reverse from removal from a photo-album page designed with strips of very light adhesive), but clearly with a stronger appearance. Bright and clean, both front and back, with a light diagonal crease near the upper left corner. The back has a boldly printed advertisement for Sporting Life. This is an extremely attractive example of one of the most striking and rarest of all Christy Mathewson cards, with an appearance far superior to its technically accurate SGC-assigned grade. Dimensions: 5-5/8 x 7-1/2 inches. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $4,994
