1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $8,813

Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. Very attractive example of one of Ty Cobb's rarest and most stunning cards, and one of the key Hall of Famers in the six-card 1911 M110 Sporting Life cabinet-card set. This is one of six M110s that were among the highlights of a small but remarkable childhood collection of our consignor’s grandfather that included a complete set of six M110s and eight M116s. These cards have been carefully stored by the family since 1911! All are new to the organized collecting world and are presented in a total of eight lots in this auction. This magnificent M110 example features a beautiful full-color pastel artwork of Ty Cobb in a classic batting stance on the front and an advertisement for Sporting Life on the reverse. The M110 set is similar in design to, but far rarer than, the contemporary T3 Turkey Red cabinets. In fact, while hundreds of T3 Cobbs exist (and that card is universally recognized as one of the great classic Cobb cards), probably fewer than twenty M110 Cobbs are known. Its extreme rarity, and that of the entire M110 set, gives this interesting card great value compared to other Cobb cards of the era. The beauty of this card combined with its incredible rarity explain why the M110 Cobb is considered one of the all-time great classic cards of the era. Technically graded GOOD condition by SGC (due to a hint of foxing in the lower left and surface wear on the reverse from removal from a photo-album page designed with strips of very light adhesive), but clearly with a stronger appearance, with even wear on the corners, and an insignificant light crease on the bottom edge. The back of the card features a boldly printed advertisement for Sporting Life . This is a very attractive and conservatively graded example of one of the rarest and most beautiful of all Ty Cobb cards. Dimensions: 5-5/8 x 7-1/2 inches. Reserve $5,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,813
