1911 T205 Gold Border Complete Master Set Minus Two (208 Plus 9 Variations)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $26,438
The T205 Gold Borders set is universally recognized as one of the most classic of all tobacco-card issues and includes all the great stars of the era and many rarities. Presented is an exceptionally attractive complete master set (minus two) of 208 cards plus nine variations for a total of 217 cards (missing just Hoblitzell - no stats variation and Wilhelm - "suffe ed" in bio for completion). This set was assembled very many years ago. The cards span all grades and include many significant condition highlights; the entire set has tremendous eye-appeal across the board and even the lesser-graded cards are very pleasing and exhibit bright colors and crisp focus. This is a very carefully assembled set put together by an old-time collector who was unusually condition-conscious for his time: few cards have creases, and most cards have been downgraded due solely to normal corner and edge wear. Even among those cards with creases, most creases are minor. We have selected thirty-six cards for grading by SGC. While we have tried to select the most important key cards for professional grading, with few exceptions the ungraded cards remaining in the set maintain the same overall pleasing aesthetics. As can be seen below, almost all cards in the set grade in a very tight range from Very Good to Vg-Ex/Ex condition, with an approximately equal distribution at each level (includes some Ex or better, and just a very few Good or lesser). This is a gorgeous set, rarely offered in complete-set form in such a desirable and consistent grade. As anyone who has seen graded T205s can verify, T205s tend to be graded very harshly, and almost all of these cards have an appearance far superior to their assigned grades. Keys: Baker (Vg-Ex), Barger/part "B" (EX/NM 80), Bender (Vg-Ex), Bresnahan/mouth closed (Vg), Bresnahan/mouth open (EX 60), Brown (Vg), Chance (Vg), Chase/gold frame extends (Vg-Ex), Chase/frame ends (Vg), Chase/left ear (VG/EX 50), Cicotte/"Black Sox" (VG 40), Clarke (EX 60, American Beauty back), Cobb (VG 40), Collins/mouth closed (Vg), Collins/mouth open (VG 40), Crandall/"t" not crossed (EX/NM 80), Crandall/"t" crossed (EX 60), Dahlen (EX 60), Donohue (Vg), Doughtery/red sock (Ex), Doughtery/white sock (Vg-Ex, Sovereign back), Duffy (EX 60, Polar Bear back), Evers (VG 40, Sovereign back), Fisher (Vg), Ford/white (Vg, Polar Bear back), Graham/Cubs (VG 40, Polar Bear back), Grant (Vg-Ex), Gray/no stats on back (Vg), Gray/stats on back (EX 60), Griffith (Vg), Harmon/left ear (Vg-Ex), Hoblitzell/"Cin." after 1908 stat (Vg, Polar Bear back), Hoblitzell/name incorrect (Vg), Hoblitzell/name correct (Gd, Polar Bear back), Huggins (Vg), Jennings (VG/EX 50), Johnson (VG/EX 50), Joss (VG/EX 50), Karger (EX+ 70), Kleinow (EX 60), Latham/W. Minor Leaguers: Adkins (Vg), Batch (Vg), Cady (Gd), J. Collins (EX 60), Dunn (Vg), Frick (Vg-Ex), Hanford (EX 60), Lee (Gd), McAllister (EX 60), Merritt (Vg), Nee (Vg), and Phelan (EX 60). The balance of the cards, as noted above, also range from Vg to Vg-Ex/Ex (and include some Ex or better, and just a very few Good or lesser). Most of the backs are Piedmont, Sweet Caporal, Hassan, or Honest Long Cut, but also included are Broad Leaf (one example), Sovereign, Polar Bear, American Beauty, and Cycle (one example). This is an outstanding mid- to high-grade T205 set, far nicer than usually seen (as implied by its grades), far more complete than usually seen (it is a master set including all variations but two), and, of course, including all of the many Hall of Famers, minor leaguers, and many rarities that make the T205 Gold Borders set so challenging to complete. The equivalent SMR value for the thirty-six SGC-graded cards (not including the 181 ungraded cards) is $16,915. Total: 217 cards. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000++. SOLD FOR $26,438
