1911 T205 Gold Border Collection (56 cards)
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $1,880
Collection of fifty-five different (plus one duplicate) 1911 T205 Gold Borders, ranging in condition from Pr to Vg-Ex, highlighted by nine Hall of Famers, several rarities, and two minor leaguers. Eleven cards are graded and encapsulated by SGC (except one PSA). Highlights: Adkins/minor leaguer (Pr), Baker (Pr), Barger/partial "B" (PSA GOOD 2 [MK], with Honest Long Cut back; extremely rare front-back combination), Bender (Pr-Fr), Brown (SGC VG 40, light surface wrinkle near the lower right corner, otherwise Ex-Mt), Cady/minor leaguer (Fr), Collins/mouth open (SGC POOR 10), Duffy (SGC GOOD 30), Fisher (Gd), Ford/white cap (SGC GOOD 30), Huggins (SGC GOOD 30), Speaker (SGC FAIR 20), Sweeney (Fr), Tinker (Pr), Vaughn (Fr), and Young (SGC FAIR 20). The three additional cards graded by SGC are Bridwell (VG 40), Mitchell (VG/EX 50), and D. White (VG/EX 50). The balance of the cards in this collection grade as follows: fifteen cards range from Gd to Vg, and twenty-two are lesser (mostly Fr but including a few Pr and one trimmed). The fifty-five different T205 Gold Borders in the collection represent 26% of the set, and could serve as a substantial foundation for the building of a very attractive low- to mid-grade complete set of this classic tobacco-card issue (all the more so with the many Hall of Famers and scarce cards included). The rare Barger/partial "B" variation that is included may be a "sleeper.". In addition to being one of the rare cards in the set, this particular example has an Honest Long Cut advertising reverse. It is our understanding that this is a very rare front-back combination. While the study of T205 backs is in its infancy compared to T206 backs, interest is growing and very likely to increase much more with time. As population report numbers for T205 backs grow statistically more significant with each passing month (they are currently tracked only by SGC), this card may someday be valued at a significant premium for its Honest Long Cut advertising reverse. The equivalent SMR value for just ten of the SGC graded cards (not including the one PSA qualified card and the 45 ungraded cards) is $950. Total: 56 cards (55 different plus one duplicate). Reserve $400. Estimate $800/$1,200+. SOLD FOR $1,880
