1911 T205 Gold Border Collection Including Two Mathewsons, Johnson, Young (107)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,525

Collection of 94 different (plus thirteen duplicates for a total of 107 cards) 1911 T205 Gold Borders including twenty-one Hall of Famers, highlighted by two Christy Mathewsons, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young. These cards were part of a very substantial totally untouched collection of 1910-era tobacco cards consigned to this auction (all cards from this collection appear in several lots of the auction), which was saved for decades by the family of the original owner. We have selected three cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (submitted by REA). Condition: Forty-seven cards grade Vg to Vg-Ex, and the balance of sixty cards are lower grade, ranging from Poor to Good. Highlights: two Bender (both Pr), two Brown (Vg and Pr), two Chance (Gd and Pr), Cicotte ("Black Sox" member, Fr-Gd), Clarke (Vg), Collins/mouth closed (Pr), Crandall/"T" not crossed (Pr), Duffy (SGC VG/EX 50), Gray/no stats on back (Vg-Ex), Griffith (Gd), Huggins (Pr), Leifield/"A" on front (Vg-Ex), two Marquard (Fr and Pr), two Mathewson (both Pr), McGraw (Pr), Tinker (Pr), Wallace/cap (Gd), Wheat (Pr), and Young (SGC POOR 10). Today these collections of modest-grade classic cards, especially when offered with key stars such as Christy Mathewson, Walter Johnson, and Cy Young as is the case here, represent some of the best values in all of vintage-card collecting. This collection of T205 Gold Borders, with ninety-four different cards representing 45% of a complete set, could easily serve as a solid foundation for the building of an exceptionally attractive low- to mid-grade set. The equivalent SMR value for the just the three SGC-graded cards (not including the 104 ungraded cards) is $815. Total: 107 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $3,525
