1911 T205 Gold Border Christy Mathewson "Cycle 1 Loss" Variation

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,700

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only example graded at this level by PSA, with only one graded slightly higher (PSA EX+ 5.5). Rare high-grade example of the 1911 T205 Gold Border "Cycle 1 Loss" printing variation of Hall of Famer Christy Mathewson. Outstanding ultra high-grade example! This is a gorgeous card that would be a prize T205 Mathewson even if it were not the rare variation! This variation is a relatively new discovery in the set that has only just recently been recognized by The Standard Catalog and grading companies as a checklist addition to the T205 set. The “Cycle 1 Loss” variation error card is defined by the missing “1” from Mathewson's stats on the card’s reverse (Mathewson's pitching stats for the 1908 season are listed as "37-1," when in actuality he lost eleven games). This back variation appears only on T205 Mathewson cards with a Cycle Cigarettes back. This striking example has flawless colors and perfect registration. The corners and edges have light, even wear appropriate for the assigned grade. Centered 35/65 left to right and 45/55 top to bottom. The reverse is perfectly clean with crisp, bold black printing, centered to the far right. Both the extreme cleanness of the reverse and the boldness of its printing, of course, are particularly desirable and ideal qualities for this variation card. This is an extremely attractive and extremely highly graded example that, as a new checklist addition, is needed in virtually every T205 master set. Because of its recent discovery and scarcity, there is no consensus on the value of this card. As always, we are confident the auction process will provide clarity. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open).
