1911 T212 Obak Complete Set (175)
Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $23,500
Outstanding complete high-grade set of 1911 T212 Obak Cigarettes cards (175 cards). Obaks are among the most popular of all early card issues featuring players from the Pacific Coast League. While catalogued simply as T212, Obaks were actually issued over a period of three years, from 1909 to 1911, and are really three sets. The 1910 and 1911 Obak sets, in addition to featuring players from the six PCL teams, also feature players from the four-team Northwestern League. This 175-card 1911 set, highlighted by the rare Buck Weaver card, is the last of the three annual T212 baseball cards from Obak Cigarettes. The 1911 set cards are easily distinguished by the red printing on their backs. This is a gorgeous set that has been locked away for decades in the collection of one of the hobby's great pioneer collectors (who passed away in 2009). We have selected nine cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. The complete SGC condition composite follows: One NM 84: Hogan. One EX/NM 80: Gordon. Four EX 60: Cutshaw, Mensor, Ryan, and Warren. Three VG/EX 50: Dillon, Ten Million (Ex on front downgraded due to a factory rubber stamp on reverse), and Buck Weaver (the front of the card is in Ex-Mt condition; the reverse has a few light surface creases). The balance of the cards grade as follows: 60% range from Ex to Nr/Mt (averaging Ex-Mt), 40% Vg to Vg-Ex. Sixty-five of the cards have a factory rubber stamp on the reverse. This is by far the highest-grade set of 1911 Obaks we have ever seen. All of the cards are bright and crisp, with vibrant colors, perfect registration, and with a much better appearance than suggested by their technically accurate grades. This is a rare opportunity to acquire an extremely attractive complete high-grade set of the final year of issue of Obaks. Total: 175 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $23,500
