1887 N172 Old Judge John Ward Portrait - PSA EX 5

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,410

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Only one graded at this level by PSA with just one graded higher. 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait of Hall of Famer "J. Ward, S.S., New Yorks." There are very few portraits in the N172 Old Judge series, let alone of Hall of Famers, and this card of John Ward has a particularly striking and unusual design as it includes Ward's identification and team affiliation in large white letters in an arc across his chest as well as along the bottom of the card. This is the only portrait of John Ward in the Old Judge series among the ten poses in which he appears in the set. This a very attractive card, with the photo just a hint light (as is typical for this card), no creases, strong corners with a little wear in the lower left, and a perfectly clean back, with a slight roughness to the surface of the reverse that suggests that the card may have long ago been removed from an album. The Ward portrait pose is much rarer than most other N172 Ward poses, and is universally recognized as by far the most desirable and distinctive of the ten Ward poses. This is a very highly graded PSA example of one of the classic cards of the nineteenth-century and one of the key Hall of Famer cards of the entire N172 Old Judge series. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,410
