1910 S74 Baseball Tobacco Silks Collection Including Ty Cobb (80)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525
Collection of eighty 1910 S74 Tobacco Silks, including twenty-six Hall of Famers, highlighted by Ty Cobb, two Christy Mathewsons, and Walter Johnson. The collection is comprised of thirty-three of the slightly larger "colored" S74 silks, including fifteen HOFers, plus forty-seven of the smaller “white” S74 silks, including two commons with the original brown advertising paper backing and eleven HOFers. (Note: The slightly larger "colored" silks were not issued with advertising backs.) All of the silks have slight fraying to the edges (which is standard for this series). The colored silks all (except one) have the factory number along the top and the cigarette manufacturer (Turkey Red or Old Mill) along the bottom. The collection grades Excellent overall with a few slightly lesser (downgraded for scrapbook paper and glue residue on the four corners of the reverse). This collection is loaded with highlights, and would be an ideal foundation for the assembly of an extremely impressive mid- to high-grade set. The breakdown of 80 silks is as follows (quantities in parentheses): White Silks (47) : Ames, Bender (HOF), Bresnahan (HOF), Brown (HOF, 2), Byrne (2), Camnitz, Clarke (HOF), Criger, Devlin, Devore, Doolan (2), Elberfeld, Fletcher, Flynn, Foxen, Gibson, Hartsel, Knight, Marquard (HOF), Mathewson (HOF, 2), McGraw (HOF), McIntire, Meyers, Murray, Payne, Pelty, Phillippe, Reulbach, Schulte, Sheckard, Snodgrass, Speaker (HOF), Steinfeldt, Tannehill (2), Tinker (HOF), Titus, Turner, White, Willett, Wilson (2), and Wolter. Colored Silks (33): Ames, Archer, Bresnahan (HOF, 2), Byrne (2), Chase, Cicotte, Cobb (HOF, scrapbook paper and glue residue on the four corners of the reverse, otherwise Ex), Devore, Doyle (3), Duffy (HOF), Dygert, Flynn (2), Hemphill (2), Johnson (HOF), Jones, McGraw (HOF), Marquard (HOF), Meyers, Overall, Phillippe, Reulbach, Schulte, Sheckard (2), Snodgrass (2), and Wiltse. By any measure, S74s represent one of the very best values of all 1910-era baseball tobacco issues. This is a particularly attractive collection of these colorful tobacco premiums, including an extremely high concentration of Hall of Famers. Total: 80 silks. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+.
