1887 N172 Old Judge Mike "King" Kelly - Boston Portrait - From Billy Sunday's Personal Collection!
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Exceptionally bold 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait card of Hall of Famer Mike "King" Kelly with "Boston" on jersey, identified as "$10,000 Kelly." All Old Judge portrait cards are very desirable. This portrait pose, featuring Mike "King" Kelly with Boston, is among the most desirable cards in the Old Judge set. This particular card has a fascinating and well documented history: It was once personally owned by Billy Sunday, the ballplayer who became so very well known as a preacher after his Major League playing days. Sunday was a teammate of Kelly with Chicago from 1883 to 1886. The card was purchased in 1973 by Keith Mitchell, one of the hobby's earliest advanced Old Judge collectors, along with other materials from the Sunday estate, and the card is accompanied with a detailed letter by Keith Mitchell documenting the interesting history of the card. This is a simply spectacular example with a very bold portrait, outstanding contrast, no creases, and just a little corner wear. The front is in Excellent condition (possibly Vg-Ex/Ex due to a hint of rounding to corners). The card has been downgraded solely due to a small area of minor surface paper loss to the blank reverse, which is so common to Old Judges and obviously the result of having long ago been taped or glued into an album and later removed. This is an outstanding example of one of Kelly's most impressive cards, and one of the rarest and most desirable Hall of Famer poses in the Old Judge set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+.
