1909-1911 T206 Christy Mathewson - Portrait - PSA EX-MT 6

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of the three classic poses of Christy Mathewson from the T206 White Borders series. The T206 Christy Mathewson portrait pose is one of the most popular of all T206s, and one of the most highly regarded of all Mathewson cards. This example has a particularly bold image and extremely vibrant colors. It is centered to the top left (approximately 40/60 L/R and 40/60 T/B), with a very slight diamond cut. This is a very sharp-looking card, extremely clean, both front and back, with four sharp corners (a tiny corner bend on the lower right). Sweet Caporal advertising on the reverse is well centered and boldly printed. There is a very tiny hairline surface bump on the lower left border (near the top of Mathewson's right shoulder). With the exception of the centering issue, and the tiny bump on the lower left border, this card has the appearance of a NM-MT example. This card (submitted for grading by REA) was very carefully chosen for purchase by our consignor in the early days of conventions in the 1980s, long before the advent of professional grading, precisely due to its outstanding condition. This is a stunning high-grade example of one of Mathewson’s most striking cards. The SMR value for the assigned grade is $3,000. Reserve $500. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $1,880
