1909-1911 T205 and T206 Tobacco-Card Collection (173) Including Cobb
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,113
Low-grade collection of 173 1910-era tobacco cards including twenty-three Hall of Famers (among them Cobb, Young, Mathewson, Lajoie, Joss, and Speaker) and seven T206 Southern Leaguers. The collection is comprised of sixteen T205 "Gold Borders" and 157 T206 "White Borders." Many of these cards have an appearance far superior to their technically accurate assigned grades. Seven cards have been graded by SGC (of which five were submitted by REA). 1) T205 Gold Borders (16 cards): Five cards are Gd, seven are Pr, and four cards are badly trimmed (including Hall of Famer Baker). 2) T206 White Borders (157 cards): Twenty-one cards are Vg, including Bresnahan (port., SGC VG 40) and Jennings (both hands, SGC VG 40); sixty-nine are Fr-Gd including Chesbro, Cobb (red, SGC FAIR 20), Crawford (bat, Polar Bear back), Davis (Chicago), Joss (port., SGC FAIR 20), Keeler (bat), Marquard (hands at side), Marquard (port.), Miller (Southern Leaguer, Old Mill back), Perdue (Southern Leaguer, Old Mill back), Speaker (SGC FAIR 20), Violat (Southern Leaguer), Westlake (Southern Leaguer), and Young (port., SGC FAIR 20); sixty-one are Pr, including Bender (trees), Bresnahan (bat), Carey (Southern Leaguer), Chance (yellow), Clarke (port.), Ellam (Southern Leaguer), Flick, Huggins (both hands), Kelley, Kleinow (Boston), Lajoie (throwing), Lentz (Southern Leaguer), and Mathewson (dark cap, SGC POOR 10); and five are trimmed, including Clarke (bat). Tobacco cards in low grade represent perhaps the best value among all vintage baseball cards. They don't cost a fortune but capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting as well (some would argue better!) than more expensive higher-grade examples. This is a very interesting and unusual low-grade collection of tobacco cards with many highlights from two of the era's most popular and classic sets. The equivalent SMR value for just the seven graded cards (not including the 166 ungraded cards) is $930. Total: 173 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000+. SOLD FOR $4,113
