1910 J. H. Dockman Son "All Star Base-Ball" Complete Box with Mathewson and Coombs

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525

In 1910 J. H. Dockman & Son of Baltimore issued this striking and extraordinarily rare package-design set, with two cards featured on each box of "All Star Base-Ball Package - Candy and Gift" (one on the front, and one on the back). Dockman used generic illustrations for their design, rather than actual likenesses, of ballplayers. It is rare to find even a common player sample card from this issue, let alone a major Hall of Famer (Christy Mathewson) and star pitcher (Jack Coombs), as featured here. An original complete candy box with cards intact is practically a collecting miracle! It is virtually unheard of and this, in fact, is the very first example we have ever personally seen or offered. The box includes all flaps and could easily be reassembled if so desired. (Ideally, it has been stored flat.) Technically the box has a few extremely minor flaws (evidence of pencil erasure on one of the tabs, a small tear through Coombs' name, and a few insignificant creases), but these do not in the least detract from its extraordinary display value and remarkable overall Excellent appearance. If we had to grade each card individually by technical PSA grading standards, perhaps the Mathewson would be Excellent or EX-MT; and Coombs would be Fr (due to the tiny tear, otherwise EX) but this would not begin to do justice to the overall extremely high-grade appearance of the cards or the complete box. "All Star Base-Ball" has always been among the most elusive of all 1910-era baseball-card rarities. Everyone knows these were cut from boxes, but few have ever even seen exactly how they were issued. This box tells the story! This is a simply extraordinary example of one of the rarest of all early baseball package-design boxes, and one that features the finest example in existence of Christy Mathewson's rarest cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++.
