1914 E & S Publishing Co., Buck Weaver Postcard - Newly Discovered Example!

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293

This exceptionally rare 1914 postcard, issued by the E & S Publishing Co. of Chicago, features Chicago White Sox shortstop Buck Weaver, one of the infamous "Eight Men Out" who later conspired to throw the 1919 World Series. This is the first E & S Publishing postcard of Weaver we have ever seen and may represent a new discovery. Weaver is not currently listed as being in the set by either the 2011 Standard Catalog (twelve cards listed) or Old Cardboard (the website lists eighteen cards in the set). As is the style of these cards, an illustration of Weaver appears in the center, surrounded by cartoon vignettes illustrating facts regarding his baseball career. Included among the cartoons here is a reference to Weaver's participation in the 1914 World Tour made by the Chicago White Sox and New York Giants. The postcard (5.5 x 3.75 inches) displays light surface wear, including a tiny area of minor discoloration along the top border, and modest corner wear. It has never been mailed and there is no writing on the traditional postcard reverse. In Very Good condition overall. Reserve $200. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,293
