1962 Topps Mars Attacks Original Artwork for Card #34 - Terror in the Railroad
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $11,750
Presented is the original artwork to card #34 from the 1962 Topps "Mars Attacks" set, entitled "Terror in the Railroad." Any original "Mars Attacks" artwork is an incredible find, but this example is particularly shocking and gruesome. In this scene, subway commuters are running for their lives as a gigantic insect is tearing apart the train. Several passengers in a panic are jumping out the back door of the train for safety and electrocuting themselves on the third rail of the tracks. This nightmarish quality of this scene is precisely what made the "Mars Attacks" set so horrifying to parents, and so appealing to youngsters. This painting is the work of the legendary Norm Saunders. It is interesting to note that this original artwork includes some additional areas around the perimeter which were covered by the title panel on the issued card. Original Mars Attacks artworks are, of course, extremely rare. They have long been recognized as the most desirable, and elusive, of all nonsport artworks. Theoretically all exist, but only few examples have ever come to the marketplace over the years. Robert Edward Auctions has been fortunate to offer a total of seven "Mars Attacks" original artworks over the years. In 2004, we sold the painting for card #25 for $37,375. In 2006, we had the privilege of offering three "Mars Attacks" artworks (for card numbers 5, 23, and 42), which sold for $29,000, $19,720, and $20,880, respectively. In 2009, we sold the original artwork to the iconic card #1 The "Invasion Begins" for $82,250. In 2010, we offered two more "Mars Attacks" artworks (for card numbers 9 and 51), which sold for $26,438 and $11,750, respectively. The offered example was purchased at auction by our consignor over ten years ago and has not seen the light of day since. The provenance of this particular painting can be traced all the way back to the personal collection of the legendary Woody Gelman. It is a privilege to be able to offer any original "Mars Attacks" artwork, but all the more so to offer such a tremendous and prime example, which so effectively represents and captures the spirit and horror of the set. The artwork (5.25 x 3.25 inches) is in Excellent to Mint condition and is lightly mounted (easily removed) to a piece of white and black paper for display. Accompanied by an example of the issued "Mars Attacks" card #34. Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000+. SOLD FOR $11,750
