1940 R145 Gum, Inc. "Superman" PSA and SGC Collection (36)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,998

Impressive collection of thirty-six 1940 R145 "Superman" cards (of the 72 in the set), all different including five rare high numbers, all graded and encapsulated by PSA (25 cards) or SGC (11 cards), with many high-grade cards (including fifteen cards ranging from EX to NM+). This is a strong group in terms of condition and would serve as an ideal foundation for the assembly of a superb Superman set. Gum, Inc.'s 1940 Superman series is one of the most popular nonsport sets ever issued. Its outstanding color, detailed artwork, popular subject matter, and the exciting adventures presented on the backs, all contribute to making this set one of nonsport collecting's all-time classics. It is also one of the few sets with tremendous crossover appeal, of great interest to comic and Superman collectors, as well as card collectors. The PSA grades are as follows: One NM+ 7.5: #44. Four NM 7: #20, 32, 43, and 47. One EX-MT+ 6.5: #5. Three EX-MT 6: #16, 23, and 39. One EX+ 5.5: #9. Three EX 5: #30, 31, and 48. One VG-EX+ 4.5: #29. Nine VG-EX 4: #8, 12, 13, 15, 19, 22, 25, 26, and 42. One VG 3: #1. One GOOD 2: #52. The SGC grades are as follows: One EX+ 70: #46. Two EX 60: #14 and 37. Five VG/EX 50: #27, 28, 34, 40, and 49. Two GOOD 30: #60 and 66. One FAIR 20: #62. This is a very attractive and very substantial mid- to high-grade collection with most cards appearing better than their technically accurate PSA- and SGC-assigned grades. Rarely offered large group representing 50% of a complete set of R145s, one of the most popular of all nonsports card issues. Total: 36 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,998
