1939 R165 Gum, Inc. "War News Pictures" Set (144) Including the Rare Dirty Dozen Cards Plus Poster

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $9,988

Presented here is a complete 144-card set of the classic 1939 R165 "War News Pictures" bubble-gum series issued by Gum, Inc. including the rare "Dirty Dozen" cards (#109-120). In addition to the complete set, also accompanying is an extremely rare and outstanding original advertising window display for the set, and a 4-card uncut strip. The set chronicles the extraordinary world events unfolding at this time. The exceptional graphics and historically significant subject matter of this gum-card issue make it one of the all-time classics of nonsport sets from the 1930s. The twelve rare cards (#109-120) are commonly referred to by advanced collectors as the rare "Dirty Dozen." These twelve cards are among the rarest of all 1930s gum cards and have been a thorn in the side of dedicated nonsport collectors since this set was first issued. This collection has been assembled by a very advanced longtime nonsport collector over a period of many years. The advertising poster alone is an extraordinary prize. 1) Complete 144-card set. Condition report: 75% range in grade from Ex to Ex-Mt (includes a few Nr/Mt), 25% range from Gd to Vg-Ex/Ex, averaging Vg (includes a couple lesser). The rare "Dirty Dozen" cards (#109-120) are graded by SGC (all submitted by REA): #109 (EX 60), 110 (EX 60), 111 (GOOD 30), 112 (POOR 10), 113 (GOOD 30), 114 (VG 40), 115 (VG/EX 50), 116 (EX 60), 117 (EX 60), 118 (VG/EX 50), 119 (EX 60), and 120 (GOOD 30). This is a very attractive mid- to high-grade complete set. As noted, the following rare items related to the set are also included in the lot: 2) "War News Pictures" advertising window display. This rare advertising piece (9.5 x 7.5) was produced by Gum, Inc. to advertise the then just-released "War News Pictures" set. This advertising display features a large image of the artwork to card #30 on the front. Bright and clean. In Excellent to Mint condition. According to our consignor this is one of only two known examples. This is the first we have ever seen. 3) 4-card uncut strip. Cards #53, 55, 56, and 58. Technically in Good condition. This is an extraordinary "War News Pictures" collection, including a complete set (144 cards), rare advertising window display, and 4-card uncut strip. Total: 146 items. Reserve $1,000.
