1888 N78 Duke "Histories of Generals" Near-Complete Set (40/50)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,645
Collection of 40 different of the 50 cards comprising the 1888 N78 Duke "Histories of Generals" set. Missing the following ten Generals for completion: Beauregard, Butler, Early, Gordon, Hood, Lee, McClellan, McDowell, Sheridan, and Smith. Exceptionally strong group of these very unusual sixteen-page booklets with colorful covers, issued as tobacco premiums. Nineteen booklets range from Vg to Ex-Mt, and twenty-one cards are slightly lesser (mostly Good). Issued with Duke's Cigarettes, each booklet is the size of an insert card (2.75 x 1.5 inches) and features a portrait image of a U.S. General on the front with a biography presented on the interior pages. The back cover of each features a beautiful colorful lithograph of a battle scene or soldier-in-action image. This is an extremely attractive near-set with outstanding eye-appeal. Duke's "Histories of Generals" are rarely offered as a near-complete set, and are highly prized by Civil War collectors, miniature book collectors, and nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total: 40 booklets. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $1,645
