1910 E90-2 American Caramel Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $7,050

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Only one example has ever been graded higher by SGC. Outstanding Honus Wagner from the 1910 E90-2 American Caramel set. This is an exceptionally strong example of one of prewar collecting's most classic cards. When we checked the SGC population report, we were surprised to find exactly how difficult this card is to find in high grade: Of the forty-seven examples graded by SGC to date, only one has ever been graded higher than the offered card (a single SGC EX 60 example). This is a magnificent example of this very scarce and popular card, which is so similar in appearance to the famous T206 Wagner and dates from the same era. Honus did not want to encourage youngsters to smoke but had no problem with promoting candy. The "Flying Dutchman" is the key card in the 1910 E90-2 American Caramel set, which was regionally issued in the Pittsburgh area and features only members of the Pirates, the National League champions of the previous year. Rarely does an example of this classic card have such extraordinary eye-appeal. This is a gorgeous card in all respects. The colors are bold and bright. Wagner’s striking portrait image is framed by a flawless blue background. The centering is perfect. Perfectly clean, both front and back, the card has even corner wear and a just a hint of even natural toning on the reverse. This is a stunning mid- to high-grade example of this card, which is universally recognized as the key to the E90-2 set and one of the most classic and popular of all 1910-era Honus Wagner cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $7,050
