Ultra High-Grade 1954-1955 Topps Hockey Complete Set (60)

Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $15,275

Extraordinary ultra high-grade complete set of the landmark 1954-1955 Topps Hockey series, the first hockey set issued by Topps. This set appears to have been carefully assembled in the year of issue and has remained untouched ever since. These cards look like they were just printed! The flush-to-the-bottom-border design of the 1954-1955 Topps Hockey set makes this issue particularly susceptible to edge and corner wear, and makes the assembly of high-grade sets all the more difficult. This important set includes only sixty cards, and features players from the four American teams: Detroit, New York, Chicago, and Boston. This is an extremely high quality complete set of 1954-1955 Topps, one of the most popular and classic of all hockey-card sets. From a very old-time collection, this set has been stored away in a closet for decades, very likely since its year of issue. We have selected six cards to be graded and encapsulated by SGC. Keys: #1 Gamble (Vg-Ex), 3 Howell (Vg-Ex/Ex), 5 Kelly (Nr/Mt-Mt), 8 Howe (NM+ 86), 10 Worsley (NM 84), 11 Bathgate (Nr/Mt), 18 Mohns RC (NM 84), 20 Gadsby (Nr/Mt), 39 Delvecchio (NM 84), 41 Stanley (Ex-Mt), 49 Quackenbush (Nr/Mt-Mt), 51 Lindsay (NM 84), 58 Sawchuk (NM/MT 88), and 60 Schmidt (last card in set, Ex). In the balance of the set, 85% range from Nr/Mt to Nr/Mt-Mt, 15% grade Ex-Mt (with a couple slightly lesser). This is an incredible set, without question one of the finest 1954-1955 Topps Hockey sets we have ever seen. The equivalent SMR value for just the six graded cards (not including the 54 ungraded cards) is $4,035. Total: 60 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000. SOLD FOR $15,275
