1888 N28 Allen Ginter SGC-Graded Complete Set of Non-Baseball Players (40/50)

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,644

Collection of forty different of the fifty cards comprising the N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" set, entirely graded and encapsulated by SGC. N28 Allen & Ginter "World's Champions" is considered by many to be among the most beautiful of all nineteenth-century tobacco-card issues. The set features champions and stars of the day from a wide variety of sports. This collection represents a complete set of all forty non-baseball players in the N28 Allen & Ginter set. Eighteen cards range from Excellent to Near Mint condition and twenty-two range from Fair to Vg-Ex (except one Poor). The SGC condition report is as follows: Two NM 84: Gaudaur (oarsmen, Highest Graded!) and Hamm (oarsmen, only example at this level with one graded higher). Four EX/NM 6: Bogardus (rifle shooter), Carver (rifle shooter), Kilrain (pugilist), and Smith (pugilist). Five EX+ 70: Bibby (wrestler), Bubear (oarsmen), Dempsey (pugilist), Hosmer (oarsmen), and Mitchell (pugilist). Seven EX 60: Beach (oarsmen), Carney (pugilist), Carroll (pugilist), Daly (billiards), Muldoon (wrestler), Sorakichi (wrestler), and Weir (pugilist). Five VG/EX 50: Acton (wrestler), Bauer (wrestler), Frey (pool), Malone (pool), and McKay (oarsmen). Ten VG 40: Adams (billiards), Dion (billiards), McAuliffe (pugilist), McLaughlin (wrestler), Oakley (rifle shooter), Schaefer (billiards), Slosson (billiards), Teemer (oarsmen), Trickett (oarsmen), and Vignaux (billiards). Two GOOD 2: Buffalo Bill Cody (rifle shooter) and Lannon (pugilist). Four FAIR 20: McMahon (wrestler), Ross (oarsmen), Sexton (billiards), and John L. Sullivan (pugilist). One POOR 10: Hanlan (oarsmen). This is a magnificent collection of one of card collecting's most classic issues. The baseball players are often actually easier to find in this issue than the non-baseball players, precisely because they are so much more expensive. Here the work has been done, and all that are needed are the ten baseball players for completion (which are being offered separately in this auction). These forty cards represent a complete collection unto themselves or could be an ideal foundation for the assembly of a complete (including baseball) and magnificent high-grade entirely graded N28 Allen & Ginter set. This is an exceptionally sharp-looking group. Total: 40 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000+. SOLD FOR $2,644
