1910 Christy Mathewson Tuxedo Tobacco Advertising Sign
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $7,050
Stunning, full-color advertising display for Tuxedo Tobacco featuring Hall of Fame pitcher Christy Mathewson. This piece is universally regarded by collectors as one of the most classic baseball-related advertising items ever produced. Issued during the peak of his legendary career, the display features a large bust-length image of Mathewson in uniform as he makes his "pitch" for Tuxedo Tobacco: "Tuxedo gets me in a natural pleasant way. Its what I call good honest companionable tobacco, the kind to stick to." This is one in a set of three similarly designed Tuxedo Tobacco advertising displays issued at the time (the other two featured Walter Johnson and John McGraw, respectively), all of which are exceedingly rare. While the Johnson example is the rarest of the three, Mathewson's sign may be the most highly prized of the trio. Mathewson's star appeal, combined with his clean-cut image, made him the darling of Madison Avenue at the time, and among advertising displays featuring him, only the T202 Hassan Triple Folder advertising sign can compare, visually, to the Tuxedo Tobacco sign. This is perhaps the most well known Mathewson display piece in the hobby and one of the premier 1910-era baseball advertising signs featuring any player. The piece (20.75 x 11 inches) displays a hint of light surface wear and has benefitted from minor restoration to a few small border tears, the largest of which is an approximate 1 x 1-inch corner chip in the lower right. The colors remain bright and vibrant, and the piece displays an overall Excellent appearance. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $3,000+. SOLD FOR $7,050
