1909 T204 Ramly Tobacco Jesse Burkett - Square Frame

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $15,275

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Presented is a classic portrait image of Hall of Famer Jesse Burkett with an extremely rare square frame from the prized T204 Ramly series. This is one of three square-frames and the most significant highlight of a small but remarkable original-owner collection that included forty-nine T204 Ramlys, four T208 Firesides, fifty T206s, and sixty T205s, all new to the organized collecting world and presented in a total of sixteen lots in this auction. Jesse Burkett is one of only fifteen Hall of Famers in the Ramly Tobacco set. All square frames are great rarities, but this card is particularly noteworthy because it features key Hall of Famer Jesse Burkett, one of the most desirable cards in the set (and the only Hall of Famer among the square-frame subset). Burkett's career spanned sixteen years (1890-1905). During his career he batted over .400 three times, a feat duplicated only by Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby. After leaving the Major Leagues, Burkett owned and managed the Worcester club of the New England League (the team with which he is featured on this card), from 1906 to 1913, making regular appearances in the outfield until he was 45. The card is very clean, both front and back, with light wear on the corners. The portrait is crystal-clear, with a slight tilt to the image. His T204 Ramly is considered by many to be Burkett's most majestic card. This is a very attractive high-grade example of one of the most important cards from this beautiful and extremely condition-sensitive set, with the added feature of having the extremely rare "square frame." Reserve $2,500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $15,275
