2000 Roger Clemens New York Yankees Game-Used World Series Road Jersey with Steiner Sports Provenance
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,406
New York Yankees road jersey worn by Roger Clemens in the 2000 World Series against the New York Mets. Graded A10 by MEARS. That perfect MEARS grade is due in large part to the jersey's impeccable provenance. This garment originates directly from Yankees-Steiner Collectibles ("The Official Collectibles Company of the New York Yankees") and is accompanied by a LOA from the company certifying its game-used status in the 1998 World Series. The garment also features both a "Steiner Sports Memorabilia" and a "Yankees Steiner Collectibles" hologram label affixed to the manufacturer's label. The gray knit jersey is lettered "New York" on the front and features the number "22" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue on white tackle twill. The special "2000 World Series" patch appears on the right sleeve. Located on the left front tail are a "Russell Athletic" label, a "50" size tag, a flag tag reading "2 inch Extra Length," and a box tag reading "YO." Original and unaltered, the jersey displays light wear throughout. Clemens only made one start in the Yankees' five-game victory over the Mets in the 2000 fall classic, but it certainly was a memorable one. In Game 2 at Yankee Stadium Clemens limited the Mets to just two hits and no runs over eight innings while striking out nine and walking none. Turning over a 6-0 lead to the Yankees vaunted bullpen in the ninth, Clemens had to nervously watch as the Mets rallied for five runs before Mariano Rivera was finally able to put out the fire and preserve the win. Graded A10 by MEARS (5 point base grade, plus 5 points for provenance). This is one of only six Roger Clemens Yankees jerseys listed in the MEARS census and one of just four to merit a grade of A10. World Series jerseys have always been highly prized among collectors due to their historic nature and game-specific use. Roger Clemens was one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history and one of only nine pitchers to win 350 or more games. In addition to winning a record seven Cy Young Awards, Clemens also recorded 4,672 strikeouts, which is second only to Nolan Ryan. While his recent troubles involving performance enhancing drugs have cast a shadow over his career, the final chapter has yet to be written; however, whatever the outcome, no history of baseball will ever be complete without the story of Roger Clemens. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $4,406
